Network and Wi-Fi Requirements

The J1600 does not require a network to do its core job. This page explains which functions run without any connectivity, which ones use it, and what to prepare if you want them.

Basic operation: no network required

The standard out-of-box workflow — manual driving, saving locations, creating tasks on the touchscreen, and autonomous delivery — works without Wi-Fi and without any IT integration:

  • No mandatory Wi-Fi for basic use.
  • No mandatory warehouse-management system (WMS), fleet manager, or other systems integration.
  • Mapping and navigation run onboard using 3D LiDAR SLAM; no infrastructure or network dependency.

A single robot doing teach-and-repeat transport can be deployed in a facility with no usable Wi-Fi at all.

Functions that use connectivity

Connectivity becomes relevant when you scale beyond the basic workflow:

FunctionWhy it needs a network
Come-to-meThe robot is called to a location from a mobile app or web interface.
VDA 5050Fleet-level interoperability with a compatible fleet-management layer.
REST APIIntegration with other software and equipment.
Fleet ManagerOrchestration of multiple robots.
Remote supportThe support portal accepts tickets and device-log uploads.

Come-to-me, automatic charging coordination, VDA 5050 fleet management, and API integrations are advanced automation functions; VDA 5050, the REST API, Fleet Manager, and advanced mission planning require the Advanced software package — see Software Updates and dual mode for how the capability levels stack.

When Wi-Fi gets connected

If you want the robot online, Wi-Fi connection is part of Day 1 of the commissioning package — and it is genuinely optional. You can also start network-free and add connectivity later when an application grows into fleet or integration needs.

Planning notes

  • Decide before delivery whether any advanced function is in scope, so Wi-Fi coverage along the robot's routes can be checked in time.
  • Getting help does not depend on the robot being online: the on-machine Help/Support menu shows a QR code through which technical requests can be sent directly. See Diagnostics and Log Collection.
  • For detailed network specifications, ask your partner or hello@mobilerobot.com when planning a fleet or integration project.
